By Portia Dhlamini, PRISA Intern
My journey as a public relations undergraduate to pre-graduate was not my ideal path because of the challenges which I encountered.
In 2014 I was doing my third and final year of studies. The relief and excitement of closing this chapter of my life was elevated by the thought that I will be gaining access to the corporate world. During my third year I had to complete my Work Integrated Learning (WIL) which meant that I had to integrate my academic learning with its application in the workplace. I struggled for over two years to get an internship.
This put a lot of strain on my career path and made me question my capabilities. However I knew that stepping stones come and go, it all depends on what you make of them.
I stood up to what I believed in and built a bridge for my future with these stones. In January 2016 I did door-to-door job searching. One of the companies I went to was PRISA. A week after I presented my story to a wonderful woman by the name of Deborah, I received a call for an interview with the executive director Adele Paulsen. The day after the interview I was called in to sign up for an internship contract.
My perseverance and persistence had paid off. A very profound quote came to mind “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy - Norman Vincent Peale
Sometimes applying for a job online or via email and through the post is just not enough. You’ve got to have the ‘WIL’ to face the executives, the ability to handle rejection and the spunk to continue no matter what.
Your high marks will not always speak for you; most times you need to walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk to motivate your great theoretical understanding of your journey. Today I am a CPD intern at PRISA due to one reason only ‘WILLFULNESS’.
To all pre-graduates out there who need to complete their internships have a purpose with action, attitude with intention and aim with determination. Achieve your dreams through your mindset.
