It’s with great sadness that we learned of Prof Sonja Verwey’s passing this morning. Prof (as she was fondly known) has been in hospital since the weekend following complications after a respiratory infection.

Her last engagement with PRISA was in October 2019 during the Research Colloquium where she acted as moderator to the various papers presented. Her wisdom, in-depth understanding of Strategic Communication and commitment to research earned her the position of thought leader both locally and internationally.

Her prolific research, books and chapters, student supervision and conference presentations ensured that the African body of knowledge in corporate communication, public relations, marketing communication and strategic communication have grown beyond her wildest dreams.

Her academic mentoring of so many local scholars and her international relationships with various professional bodies and academic institutions will continue to shape the industry.

As a friend, colleague and coach she will be missed beyond words.

Rest in Peace, dear Prof Sonja.
